Covid-19 support: From USA to Germany, Czech Republic to Brazil

As a global company we’re supporting global and national efforts to help protect lives and livelihoods during the Coronavirus pandemic. Here are just a few examples of how we’re contributing.

Czech Republic: donation of face masks to protect people in retirement homes

At Trinec, in the Czech Republic, our colleagues from Vesuvius are helping elderly residents in three local retirement homes by donating 1150 face masks from our warehouse.

The team have also donated funds to enable a local charity that helps the elderly and vulnerable to buy two ozone generators that disinfect rooms and supported another charity by purchasing gift packages.

Germany: donation of 1,000 litres of hand sanitiser to Borken primary and secondary schools

The sanitiser is in special 10 litre canisters and is based on the WHO approved recipe of ethanol with glycerine. It is produced at our own plant in Hengelo in the Netherlands and is used in the current corona crisis in the five German and Dutch plants.

"Due to our close ties to the city of Borken and the good cooperation with the city administration, we are happy to make the sanitiser available as a free donation and thus support and help as a Borken-based company in the current crisis". Normally, we produce moulding material coatings for foundry moulds and cores at our plant in Hengelo. At this time, we have made an exception due to the crisis and produced a special production for sanitisers," says Plant Manager Marc Radomski.

Lucia Schroer HR Manager Germany adds: "We, as Vesuvius GmbH, have great respect for the enormous and untiring efforts that the town of Borken, associations, volunteers, and many people in their fields are making to help us through this time under these exceptional Covid-19 circumstances. Because of this, we have also promised the Borken DRK 500 litres. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any further quantities beyond this, as our capacities are exhausted."

The donated hand sanitiser will be used in Borken's primary and secondary schools as part of the hygiene regulations to help to contain the transmission of the coronavirus.

Brazil: contribution to the production of face masks

Following instructions given by the Brazilian Government for the population to wear face masks in public, Resende City Council organized a group of volunteers to produce fabric face masks.

Upon learning of this initiative, Vesuvius donated materials to produce 10,000 masks, including two sewing machines, cotton sheets, elastic, thread and other complementary material.

For our efforts, Vesuvius kindly received 500 fabric face masks to distribute to the families of Vesuvius employees.

It was a pleasure for Vesuvius to contribute to the ongoing fight to stop the spread of corona-virus in our community!

Brazil: support of colleagues and community to equip themselves with personal hygiene equipment

Vesuvius has also supported the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Piedade hospital to contribute to the health of the community where we have our factory. This will support the construction of a new screening centre to test for suspected cases of Coronavirus at the hospital.

Director Group Digital Services Davide Guarnieri said: "Our society is going through an unprecedented moment and Vesuvius continues to act strongly in preserving the health and safety of its people, as well as in the continuity of our business. We are experiencing a great challenge, in which, as a company and as citizens, we assert our mission to guarantee the essential services that depend on the Steel Industry always working.

"To maintain the continuity of essential services and operations, it is essential that Vesuvius and its employees continue to operate, with the awareness that we supply companies related to the maintenance of life and society in general, such as steel for the construction of hospitals and surgical equipment."
