鋼は最も用途の広い構造工学材料であるため、他の種類の金属よりも多くの鋳造品位があります。
鋼の鋳造は一般的に1550～1600°Cという高い鋳造温度で行われるため、凝固時に生じる体積収縮、溶鋼の酸化物生成に対して敏感であり、数々の特殊な問題を引き起こします。
鋳鋼品の大きさは、数グラムから数百トンまで幅が広く、その機械的特性が重要視される厳しい条件下で頻繁に使用されているため、鋳物欠陥が全くないことが特に要求されます。
