钢是应用最广泛的结构工程材料，和其它合金相比，很多牌号的钢都可以用于铸造生产。铸钢件出现的典型问题，主要与铸钢件的浇注温度高，通常在1550～1600℃，凝固过程的体收缩及钢水氧化有关。铸钢件的重量从几克到数百吨重。铸钢件通常用在重要的地方，这就需要铸钢件具有优良的机械性能，所以铸件不能有缺陷至关重要。
