- Safety is everybody’s responsibility
- Working safely is a condition of employment
- All work-related injuries and work-related ill-health are preventable
Vesuvius is fundamentally committed to protecting its employees by reducing and eliminating workplace hazards. An integrated and comprehensive approach is adopted to managing workplace risks covering people and property.
The objectives are pursued through policies, standards and procedures. A major change programme, ‘Safety Breakthrough’ was launched in 2008. This global initiative was designed to reduce the number of accidents in the business to the lowest level within the industry sector, with the ultimate goal to reach zero accidents throughout the company.
- Senior Executives regularly lead safety tours at all locations
- All severe accidents are formally reviewed by the Group Executive Committee
- Employees are routinely engaged in safety audits
- Vesuvius invests significantly in safety training for all employees, irrespective of their roles and functions
- All employees are expected to routinely raise and implement safety improvement opportunities with the focus on the number of implemented ideas
- Safety standards are developed, reviewed and updated and deployed globally throughout Vesuvius
- Policies are translated and deployed globally
- All injuries and dangerous occurrences are analysed locally with a formal presentation of findings, root causes, and improvement actions cascaded through Management
As part of this initiative – Turbo S – builds on the foundation of Safety Breakthrough and includes a broad range of actions based on recording, investigation, analysis, learning and sharing and the subsequent development of new or improved safety procedures.
Turbo S features:
- The implementation and sharing of best practices through Vesuvius standards and other tools
- A commitment to become a true Learning Organisation, avoiding repeat accidents and sharing lessons learned
- Total employee involvement, with the need for safety improvement being driven at the most senior levels of the business
- A key part of the Turbo S programme is to ensure that safety audits become an established and sustainable part of the Group’s ongoing safety efforts
- Vesuvius continuously work in partnership with its customers and suppliers to deliver improved safety standards in all of our workplaces
Our aims
- No Accidents
- No Repeat Injuries
- No Harm to People
The Vesuvius ethos is to identify, eliminate, reduce or control all workplace risks. Vesuvius prioritise activities based on detailed analysis of incidents and improvement opportunities. Where a need is identified, internal standards are developed and rolled out globally. All serious incidents are followed up by red stripes or safety alerts. The current strategies show significant improvement over the past eight years in terms of reducing the severity and number of lost time injuries.
